CAMPINE

The Campine fowl originated in Belgium, where it has been bred for several centuries, so it justly can claim purity of race over a very long period. The name is derived from the Campine country, where these fowls are bred largely for the production of white-shelled eggs. The two Belgian breeds, Braekel and Campine, are practically the same in all points except size, the Braekel being the larger fowl.

The English, or Standard, Campine of today is a composite of the two Belgian varieties; the plumage of the Campine male and female is identical in colour pattern.

Campines carry more weight than their appearance indicates, due to the fact that the plumage is close-fitting. The two varieties, Silver and Golden Campines, were admitted to the Standard in 1914.

Economic Qualities: Primarily bred for egg production, classed as a non-sitting, utility fowl, but sprightly carriage and attractive colour markings have made Campines popular for exhibition purposes as well. Colour of skin, white; colour of egg shells, white.

Disqualifications Red covering more than one-half of the ear-lobes; white in the face of cockerels; shanks other than leaden-blue. Characteristic male feathers appearing in the back, saddle or wing-bows of the male shall disqualify, Campines being hen-feathered in both sexes.
