The Ayam Cemani has gained international fame as the blackest of chicken breeds. It has very darkly pigmented flesh, very dark plumages and skin and has long been regarded as having healing properties similar to the Silkie chicken. The Ayam Cemani was bred selectively over time to consolidate the dark pigmentation which occurs due to a natural genetic mutation within the indigenous chickens and jungle fowl of Java, Indonesia.
The breed is of medium size with obvious strength and virility that resembles a gamefowl. It is adorned in lustrous iridescent blak plumage and crowned with a single comb, holding itself with an upright and proud stance.
